Over the years, Coldplay has inspired fans around the world even with some new Coldplay songs. They have made a name in the music industry and with this, many have come to love the band’s style and sound. Recently however, Coldplay has incorporated a new style to their music showing through in their fifth and latest album entitled Mylo Xyloto, some calling it New Coldplay. This move has sparked mixed reviews and reactions especially with long-time Coldplay fanatics. There were some who were disappointed. Others however, warmly welcomed this new development in Coldplay’s music.

As many are aware of, Coldplay was previously known for their sweet ballads, dreamy tunes, and let’s not forget Chris Martin’s vocals. On the other hand, the new Coldplay style combines a catchy mix of instrumentals coupled with more upbeat tunes, on top of Chris Martin’s vocals. According to an interview by Technique College Newspaper with lead singer Chris Martin, “What it is, is an attempt to have a completely fresh start, from our history and from anyone else’s recording history”

 Mixed Reviews on the New Coldplay Style

Although there’s nothing wrong in trying new things and exploring different music styles, it might have been a risky move for Coldplay to let go of the style and sound that have made them popular in the music industry. The new Coldplay style got mixed reactions.

Some say that with their new Coldplay style, the band tries too much to bring something new to the plate that it becomes overpowering and scattered. They also argue that the new production seems to be just a tad too much.  Some songs are also said to resound songs from other bands such as Radiohead, Arcade Fire, and U2.

However, there are songs that still channel the previous style of Coldplay. These songs include: Us against the World, Up In Flames, and U.F.O., among others. In addition, many have favorable reviews were given despite the album having a new and different style. One of the songs that shine through in the album is the song ‘Don’t Let It Break Your Heart’. It’s innovative and it very much still feels like Coldplay, but with an upbeat, fun, and fresh sound, without trying so hard to bring something different. Moreover, hints of the previous style of Coldplay are still present while it moves forward, with a mix of both old and new styles. Despite the generally new Coldplay style, some fans are still supportive and open to exploring new developments in Coldplay’s music.

The New Coldplay Style and Band Members’ Reactions toward Criticism

Amidst divided reactions and criticisms, the band Coldplay generally sees these things as constructive criticisms that help them improve, learn, and grow as a band. According to Chris Martin, “Sometimes we have criticism that is very constructive. Although it’s painful at the time, most of the things that people have said about us negatively- some of them are true and you can work on them, and the ones that you don’t agree with, you don’t work on.” It makes them look within and examine themselves and work on what they should improve upon. At the same time, they realize the things that they value the most, with the way it reinforces their beliefs and principles.

In conclusion, the new Coldplay has continued to inspire so many people around the world with their substantial contributions in the music industry. Not to mention, the way the band goes all out during performances, as their music emanates in leaps and bounds. Although they may have received criticisms especially with their new Coldplay style, they remain strong and positive in their passion for music, while still being open to different feedback.
